Key Stage 3 Curriculum
Art and Design offers a creative and engaging curriculum which plays a valuable part in the education of our young people. The course provides pupils with the opportunities to develop their creativity and visual language through expressing feelings, opinions and ideas about the world in which they live. Pupils study the work of artists and designers from different periods, styles and major movements from ancient times up to the present day. Their critical understanding of art informs the development of their own work and their knowledge of how art contributes to culture and the creative industries.
Pupils investigate a broad range of themes which cover: The Environment, The Figure, Portraiture, Identity, Oriental and Egyptian Design. Pupils use sketchbooks to analyse, imagine, experiment and invent using different methods and materials including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ICT, card construction and mixed media.
Pupils attend one art lesson per week during years 7 and 8. During year 9 pupils attend art lessons as part of the Expressive Arts curriculum carousel.
Key Stage 4 Curriculum
Pupils follow the AQA Fine Art GCSE syllabus which provides a strong foundation for further progression to Art and Design related courses such as A-level Art and Design and enhanced vocational and career pathways.
Assessment is by Unit 1: Portfolio of Work (Controlled Assessment) 60 per cent and Unit 2: Externally Set Task 40 per cent.
Pupils attend 3 lessons per week and are encouraged to attend extra-curricular art workshops regularly.
Pupils investigate inspiring and stimulating units of work which include: Identity, Natural and Manmade Forms, Animal Structures and Personal Project Work. They build and refine their skills progressively using a wide range of disciplines, including traditional and new media. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary artists and designers through interpretation, engagement and practise.
During the course pupils will:
• Develop creative links and critical/contextual understanding through meaningful investigation of artists and designers from different periods, places and cultures. Pupils are encouraged to visit galleries and museums as part of their independent art research.
• Develop personalised sketchbooks through analytical, experimental and expressive approaches which build their confidence in using a wide range of methods and materials; observational drawing, collage, printmaking, painting, 3D work, mixed media, photography and new media.
• Build on analytical drawing skills through regular observational drawing tasks which are a fundamental aspect of the course. Pupils will have the opportunity to observe exhibits of bird species from the Bolton Museum loan collection.
• Develop visual vocabulary to evaluate, interpret and express ideas about their own artwork and that of other artists. Reflect on learning using self and peer assessment/evaluation.
• Produce a personal response to the theme in light of sketchbook investigations, artists’ research and evaluations using appropriate media.
During year 11 pupils take part in the Creative Art Enrichment Days during which they visit a local gallery exhibition to inspire exciting and experimental art workshops. Previous workshops have explored wire modelling techniques based on Bury Art Gallery’s Contemporary Asian Sculpture exhibition ‘Scintilla from our Sun’ and paper sculpture techniques in response to The Manchester Gallery’s ‘The First Cut’ exhibition.
Pupils’ creative talent is celebrated in our annual GCSE Art Exhibition Evening which is a popular event in our school community. Visitors can see the pupils’ personal response to themes which include larger scale acrylic paintings, 3D work, printmaking, Batik textiles and Photoshop techniques.
Extra-curricular workshops are run weekly to support the development of pupils’ skills and research.
